Forty Years Disappeared From the Church Bulletin

Forty years disappeared from the church bulletin.

Every Sunday since 1985, I played the piano at our church in Des Moines, Iowa.

Weddings, funerals, Christmas Eve services—I was there for all of them.

I never accepted a dollar.

Then a new music director arrived.

When the Sunday bulletin listed the musicians, my name was gone.

He smiled politely and said, “We’re looking for a sound that appeals to younger families.”

Younger families.

Forty years at that piano, and suddenly I sounded too old.

I nodded once and said, “Understood.”

Then I closed the piano lid, picked up my music folder, and walked through the quiet sanctuary.

Three weeks later, the church held its Easter concert.

Every seat was filled.

People stood along the back wall.

The new music director had advertised the program all over town—modern arrangements, a youth choir, string players from the university, new lighting, even a fog machine someone on the board had apparently approved.
