He Invited His Entire Family to Dinner—Then Tried to Hand Me the $800 Bill

My boyfriend and I planned a simple dinner for two.

At least, that was what I thought.

When I arrived at the restaurant, Ryan was standing near the host desk with his entire family.

His parents.

His older brother and wife.

His younger sister.

Two cousins.

Even his aunt.

Nine people total, including me.

Ryan smiled as if he’d just arranged the sweetest surprise imaginable.

“They’ve been dying to meet you.”

I stopped walking.

“You said dinner for two.”

“I know. But this worked out better.”

Behind him, his mother waved enthusiastically.

I should have left.

Every instinct in me said to turn around, get back in my car, and go home.

But I didn’t want to make a scene.

So I smiled.

Introduced myself.

And sat down.

That was mistake number one.

The restaurant was one of the most expensive steakhouses in Dallas.

I had been there once before with coworkers after we closed a major account.
