My Ex-Mother-in-Law Insulted Me at the Fertility Clinic—Then She Saw Who Was With Me

One year after my divorce, my ex-mother-in-law spotted me in the waiting room of Westbridge Fertility Clinic in Denver.

She stopped in front of me with the same smug little smile I had seen across Thanksgiving tables for eight years.

“Well,” Linda said. “I suppose some people don’t know when to accept that something simply wasn’t meant for them.”

I looked up from the folder in my lap.

“Hello, Linda.”

She glanced toward the clinic doors.

“You’re trying again?”

I didn’t answer.

Her smile widened.

“My son certainly didn’t need to.”

That was the kind of sentence Linda specialized in.

Technically simple.

Emotionally sharpened.

“Jason and Vanessa are doing wonderfully,” she continued. “Their little girl is almost eight months old now.”

Vanessa.

My former best friend.

The woman Jason moved in with three weeks after our divorce became final.

Linda tilted her head.

“I’ve never seen him happier.”

I smiled.
