My 72-Year-Old Mom’s Younger Boyfriend Always Left Family Dinner Before Dessert. One Night, My Teenage Daughter Followed Him and Came Back in Tears.

Part 2: Seven Forty-Five

Chloe sat down at the table. She told us everything. She followed Richard on her bicycle. He drove south, the way he always did.

Ten minutes later, he turned into the parking lot of a low brick building with a garden in front.

The sign said Willow Creek Residential Care. Chloe hid behind a hedge near a big lit window.

Inside was a small room with a bed, a wheelchair, and a lamp shaped like the moon.

In the wheelchair sat a grown man. Maybe thirty. He had Richard’s dark eyes.

Richard sat down beside him and opened one of the picture books. He read it out loud, every page, while the man watched him and smiled.

Then Richard played a song on the harmonica. The man clapped his hands.

At 8:15, Richard tucked him into bed, kissed his forehead, and turned off the lamp.

Chloe said she started crying behind the hedge. She didn’t know why.
