My Son-in-Law Sent Chloe to the Terminal, but the Guard Saw Who Left Her…

The guard was pointing at the security monitor while I still had Chloe’s fingers wrapped around my coat. “Ma’am, I saw her come in,” he said. “I saw who brought her.”

That was the first thing that didn’t fit. Marcus had called at 5:02 and told me to pick up my daughter, as if Chloe had wandered to the bus terminal on her own.

But the guard was looking at the screen like he knew that wasn’t what happened. I was kneeling on the tile beside Bay 6. Chloe had one shoe, no coat, and a cut above her eyebrow.

Her skin felt cold through my hands. She’d been trying to tell me something about Marcus and his mother, Sylvia, but the words came out in pieces.

“Stay with me,” I said. “I’m trying, Mom.”

I called 911 at 5:47. I gave the dispatcher the terminal address and said Chloe was unconscious, injured, and cold. When she asked if I was in danger, I looked at my daughter and said, “Not right now. Send police, too.”
