The dresses in my closet

Chapter 1: The dresses in my closet
I Found Another Woman Living Inside My Weekends. By The Time My Husband Brought Her To Our Lake House, There Was Nothing Left For Them To Take From Me.

Her dresses were hanging between mine.

Not one dress accidentally forgotten after some party.

Six of them.

A soft green sundress. A white linen shirt. Two expensive-looking summer dresses. A black cocktail dress still sealed inside a dry-cleaning bag. And a blue wrap dress pushed between the yellow sweater Daniel had bought me for our eighteenth anniversary and the floral blouse our daughter had chosen for me last Mother’s Day.

For several seconds, I simply stood in the closet doorway.

My overnight bag was still hanging from my shoulder.

Outside the bedroom window, Lake Hartwell glittered beneath a clear June sky. Somewhere beyond the trees, a boat engine hummed across the water. Wind chimes moved gently on the porch.
