I Was Uninvited From Christmas—So I Gave Their $285,000 House to a Family Who Needed It More

PART 3

The way Dad had stopped thanking me for things and started speaking about them as if they were already his.

Even the strange conversation I had overheard between Leah and Mom two weeks earlier.

At the time, I had assumed I was imagining something.

Now I wasn’t so sure.

“What did you tell Leah?” I asked.

“What does Leah have to do with this?”

“Everything, apparently.”

Mom became defensive.

“You’re making this bigger than it is.”

“No. I’m finally seeing how big it actually is.”

I looked down at my purse.

The cream-colored envelope was still inside.

The original purchase documents.

The attorney’s correspondence.

The preliminary paperwork.

For two months, I had carried those papers around because I was excited to surprise my parents.

Now they felt like evidence from a life that had never happened.

“Mom,” I said quietly, “did you and Dad know about the house before I told you?”

“What kind of question is that?”

“Did someone tell you?”

“No.”

She answered too quickly.

I knew my mother.

I knew when she was angry.

I knew when she was embarrassed.

And I knew when she was lying.

“Mom.”

“What?”

“Who told you?”

She didn’t answer.
