I stared at her. “You never even called to ask if I had enough formula for my daughter.”

Vivian looked at me, then away. “I was handling everything behind the scenes.”

“Everything?” I repeated. “I was selling my belongings to pay rent. I was eating crackers for dinner so Maisie could have enough formula. I spent three nights sleeping upright because my injuries hurt too much for me to lie down.”

Grandma removed her glasses and slowly cleaned them with a tissue.

“I did what I thought was best,” Vivian insisted.

“No,” Grandma replied. “You did what was best for you.”

My mother, Laura, stepped forward.

“Mother, please. We don’t know the whole story yet.”

Grandma turned toward her.

“Then let’s hear the whole story.”

Miles opened another folder.
