My Husband Called Me at Work and Said, “My Uncle Just Died … and I Inherited $800 Million. Pack Your Things and Be Out Before I Get Home.”

When I walked back into our apartment that afternoon, divorce papers were already waiting on the kitchen island.

Not a suitcase.

Not an apology.

Not even a conversation.

Divorce papers.

A black fountain pen rested neatly across the top page, perfectly straight, as though my husband had measured its position with a ruler.

That was Jason.

Everything had to look organized even when he was destroying someone.

I stood in the doorway for several seconds with my work bag hanging from my shoulder and stared at the papers.

Jason was standing beside the windows overlooking downtown Chicago with a glass of bourbon in his hand.

It wasn’t even four o’clock.

He had changed out of the navy suit he’d worn that morning and put on the expensive gray sweater his uncle had bought him for Christmas.

He looked relaxed.

Almost happy.

“You’re early,” he said.

I closed the door behind me.
