My daughter told me she couldn’t afford to bring the kids home for Christmas, so I sent her $1,200 for airfare.

A week later, she posted pictures from a ski resort with her husband.

I didn’t comment.

I didn’t call immediately.

I just sat at my kitchen table staring at the photograph of my grandchildren in matching red jackets while the coffee beside me went cold.

Thirteen-year-old Sophie stood between her little brother, Ben, and my daughter, Rachel. Snow-covered mountains filled the background. Her husband, Evan, had one arm around Rachel and the other raised toward the camera holding a glass of champagne.

The caption said:

Christmas came early. So grateful for family surprises.

My chest tightened.

Three days earlier, Rachel had cried on the phone.

“Mom, I’m so sorry.”

“For what?”

“We can’t come for Christmas.”

I had been standing in the grocery store choosing between two kinds of cranberry sauce.

“What happened?”

“Flights are insane. Evan’s work bonus got delayed, and after the car repair…”

Her voice cracked.

“We just don’t have it.”
