MY BOYFRIEND AND I PLANNED A SIMPLE DINNER FOR TWO.

At least, that was what I thought we had planned.

My boyfriend, Ryan, had texted me that afternoon:

Dinner at Bellamy’s? Just us. 7:00. I miss you.

I smiled when I read it.

We had both been busy all week. I’d been preparing quarterly reports at work, and Ryan had been helping his younger brother move apartments.

So a quiet dinner sounded perfect.

No friends.

No family.

No big plans.

Just us.

I even changed clothes after work because Bellamy’s was nicer than the places we usually went.

Nothing extravagant.

A navy dress, small earrings, low heels.

I arrived at 6:57.

Ryan had already texted:

I’m inside. They gave us a table in the back.

I walked through the restaurant expecting to see him sitting alone with maybe a glass of wine.

Instead, I found twelve people.

Ryan.

His parents.

His younger brother, Lucas.

Lucas’s girlfriend.

Ryan’s older sister, Melissa, her husband, and their two teenage sons.
