“My husband told me to watch my mouth in my own home.

Three weeks later, he discovered I had sold the house.”

The sentence sounds satisfying when I tell the story now.

Clean.

Sharp.

Almost funny.

There was nothing funny about the moment it happened.

My mother-in-law, Diane, arrived on a Thursday afternoon with two enormous suitcases, a prenatal body pillow, three grocery bags, and my heavily pregnant sister-in-law, Madison.

I was standing in the kitchen when I heard the front door open.

Not the bell.

The door.

Diane had a key.

I had never given her one.

That should have told me everything.

“Eric?” I called.

My husband appeared from the hallway.

He had come home from work early without mentioning it.

Then Diane stepped inside.

Behind her, Madison moved slowly, one hand supporting the underside of her stomach.

She was almost eight months pregnant.

I liked Madison.

Or at least I had.

She was twenty-seven, soft-spoken, usually reasonable, and stuck in a marriage that had apparently fallen apart very quickly.
