Part2-After my affair came to light, my husband never touched me again. For 18 years, we lived under the same roof like strangers.

PART 2 — THE SIGNATURE I NEVER GAVE
I stared at Dr. Evans as if she had started speaking another language.
“My hospitalization?”
“Yes,” she said. “You told me you were admitted in 2008 after an overdose.”
I pulled the paper gown tighter around myself.
“They pumped my stomach. That was all.”

Dr. Evans didn’t answer immediately.
That silence frightened me more than anything she could have said.
“Wasn’t it?”
“I don’t know, Susan.”
My heart began pounding.

“What exactly are you seeing?”
She pointed toward the ultrasound screen.

“There are changes around your reproductive organs that strongly suggest an invasive procedure occurred years ago. But an ultrasound can only tell me so much. I need your old hospital records before I say anything more definite.”
I felt suddenly cold.

“I never agreed to any procedure.”
“Do you remember signing consent forms?”
“No.”
“Do you remember speaking with a surgeon?”
“No.”

“Do you remember anyone explaining complications after you woke up?”
“No.”
Dr. Evans leaned back.
“Then we need the records.”
I almost laughed.

Not because anything was funny.
Because eighteen years earlier, I had woken in a hospital bed with Michael holding my hand and telling me the pain in my abdomen came from having my stomach pumped.
And I had believed him.
I had believed everything he told me because I was ashamed.
Because I had cheated.
Because I thought whatever happened afterward was something I deserved.

“Could this explain why I had pain when I woke up?” I asked.
“It could.”
The room seemed to tilt.
I closed my eyes.
For the first time in years, I could smell that hospital again.
Disinfectant.
Plastic.
