part 6-The Cast Came Off—and the ER Finally Saw What Had Been Hidden

Part 21
The DNA report changed the investigation again.
Not because it proved who had hurt Eli.
It didn’t.
But it proved something no one could honestly deny anymore.
Both Eli and Martha had been bleeding inside that garage on the same day.
Detective Laura Bennett stared at the laboratory report.
“So she was there.”
Rebecca nodded slowly.
“Which means she witnessed at least part of what happened.”
Laura closed the file.
“The question is whether she tried to stop it.”
Within an hour Martha’s attorney requested another meeting.
This time Martha didn’t wait for the detectives to ask questions.
She looked exhausted.
Her perfect hair had been pulled into a loose ponytail.
There was no makeup.
No pearls.

No carefully rehearsed smile.
“I want to tell you something,” she whispered.
Her attorney looked surprised.
“Martha…”
She held up one shaking hand.
“No.”
“I can’t keep doing this.”
Laura remained silent.
People often filled silence with truth.
“My blood was in the garage because I tried to pull him away.”
Nobody interrupted.
“I grabbed Daniel.”
She swallowed hard.
“He shoved me into the workbench.”
Laura carefully asked the next question.
“And Eli?”
Martha closed her eyes.
“He put his arm up.”
The room became perfectly still.
“I heard the crack.”
Her voice broke.
